Medicinal herbs as an aspect of the pharmacist

Pharmacy is a field devoted to healing mankind. Pharmacists are always keen on discovering new molecules that can be utilized in some way to treat human ailments or to promote good health in general. This discovery of new molecules mostly takes place within plants. 

Plants thus being known as a source of various molecules that are isolated from them and converted to appropriate dosage forms to increase the library of pharmaceutical drugs.

Even from ancient times, certain parts of the world like India have incorporated plants or herbs that hold medicinal value into the usage of healing of mankind through extensive knowledge of Ayurveda.

Some commonly grown kitchen herbs are known for their fully packed nutritive value and medicinal properties making them potent ingredients of first aid recipes and teas. 

5 of these medicinal herbs that work wonders are as follows :-

1. CALENDULA

One of the most diverse medicinal properties holding plants is calendula. calendula is often confused with marigolds, however, both being different can’t be medicinally interchangeable.

The entire flower of calendula offers a variety of healing benefits. It aids in digestion and has anti-inflammatory effects to make it suitable for healing burns, wounds, stings, and rashes when applied topically. Its usage must be restricted in pregnancy. Calendula is taken as herbal tea internally as a remedy for heartburn or peptic ulcers or as oil or slave topically to heal wounds or cuts. 

2. LAVENDER

Works wonders in skin and beauty lines, lavender or its essential oil are fragrant storehouses of nutritive and healing agents. Lavender works by stimulating Neurotic functions to relieve insomnia and stress.

Lavender is significantly used in aromatherapy for its sedative and relaxing effects. Since it is slightly bitter, it can be used as bile and hepatic stimulant.

3. LEMON GRASS

Lemongrass is a significant multipurpose kitchen herb that treats muscle ache , indigestion , headache , excessive sweating , athlete foot , anxiety and acne.lemongrass is well acknowledged for being used in tea preparations that promise abundant healing benefits. Some of them include healing of ulcers, relieving diarrhea , nausea and stomach upsets. Lemongrass however , should not be taken by people with kidney / liver disease , by children or by pregnant women.

4. YARROW

Yarrow today is known as a simple garden weed that is one of amazing ingredients of tea , tinctures and pills.

Yarrow works wonderfully as a remedy for nose bleeds or to break up blood clots to get rid of bruises and blood blisters. Its medicinal properties make it an effective hemorrhoid healer. Its usage in women for helping with vaginal discharge and painful periods is well acknowledged. Yarrow’s chemical components can be allergic to some and harmful for children or breastfeeding / pregnant women. 

5. CHAMOMILE

Chamomile is known as well anti-inflammatory agent that provides calming effects to both nervous and digestive systems. Chamomile can be soothing for irritated digestive tracts and comes as a great remedy for irritable bowel flare-ups. Topically it can be used to treat various fungal and bacterial infections. chamomile tea also helps with menstrual cramps. the essential oil of chamomile has anti-inflammatory effects and a beautiful bright blue colour.

Chamomile allergies are quite common and its intake must be avoided in pregnancy.
